What is Accupuncture ?

Acupuncture is an alternative medicine methodology originating in ancient China that treats patients by manipulating very thin, solid needles that have been inserted into acupuncture points in the skin. According to Traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating these points can correct imbalances in the flow of qi (energy) through channels known as meridians.

Origins of Acupuncture

Acupuncture originates from China and has been practiced there for thousands of years. Although there are records of acupuncture being used hundreds of years ago in Europe, it was during the second half of the twentieth century it began to spread rapidly in Western Europe, the United States and Canada.

Learning How to Decrease Pain and Improve Your Function

  1. Ask your physiotherapist to provide you with education about pain science and pain management

  2. Practice relaxation, breathing exercises and body awareness exercises every day. Work with your physiotherapist to bring these techniques into your exercises and daily activities.

  3. Understand that pain does not have to limit you from participating in your usual daily activities – relaxation, breath control and letting go of muscle tension may provide less need to modify activities with the guidance of your physiotherapist.

  4. Pace yourself. Work with your physiotherapist to learn how to set goals for work, hobbies and social activities that will not flare up your pain, and that will allow you to recover.

  • I work at the Vancouver General Hospital as a registered nurse.  The long shifts can put a strain on my body especially my neck and back.  The treatments at Fairview Physiotherapy were extremely helpful.  It gave me balance to my body again.  I felt like I could do all my regular activities freely once more.  I was also quite impressed with the style of treatment at Fairview Physiotherapy.

First of all, the sessions are one-to-one which is rare to find.  The therapists I’ve seen at other clinics will run around between 3-4 patients at a time and the actual one-to-one time was not very long at all (maybe 10-15 minutes).  On the other hand, the therapists at Fairview Physiotherapy will see only one patient at once.  I was given around 35 minutes of one-to-one time which was very appreciative because it allowed me to ask all my questions and get proper treatment.  I felt like the therapists spent a lot of time assessing me and explaining my diagnosis.  The treatments were manual therapy based and I was given some very helpful home exercises.  I would definitely recommend my friends and family to come to this clinic.

  • I am very happy to have found Fairview Physiotherapy, and would recommend it to anyone.  After having tried other physiotherapists, I continued to be in a lot of pain and was frustrated with my progress.  However, Kenny is very different from the other physiotherapists and has helped me significantly.  He spends the entire appointment one-on-one with his patients, and listens closely.

He uses multiple different methods of treatment to find the best solution, and provides excellent advice for steps I can take to help improve my pain and healing.  I have since referred a number of people to Kenny, and I continue to have confidence that he will take good care of them.

  • My name is Guy Moody and I am the father of a very committed 11 year old gymnast, Jessie Moody. Jessie is currently 2012 BC Champion at her level and second all-around at the 2012 Western Canadian Championships. As a high level athlete she is training 25 hours per week in a difficult and dangerous sport. As such, Jessie is constantly exposed to injuries both small and large. Thus far she has been fortunate, but all the same she still gets strains, sprains, pulls and the occasional bones out of line.

I have been taking my daughter to see Kenny for the past couple of years. Kenny has provided solid care for Jessie that gives us both great confidence. His approach is very personal and hands-on. Unlike any other physiotherapist that I have been to, Kenny is completely focussed on Jessie when she is there for the entire session. It seems to me that his hands-on approach offers him great insight into Jessie’s athletic injuries and also into possible future injuries. He takes the time to not only address the issue that caused us to pay a visit, but also to advise on preventative measures to minimise future problems. Jessie does her best to follow Kenny’s advice and I am sure that, along with her excellent coaching at Phoenix Gymnastics, Kenny is the reason for her continued good fortune with respect to injuries. I am confident that as Jessie continues in her sports career over the coming years, Kenny will be an integral part of her success as he addresses her injuries with both a reactive and a preventative approach.

    Thank you

  • I am most impressed by the caring attitude of my physiotherapist Kenny Mark and have recommended him to many of my friends.  He stayed with me working on my injured shoulders the whole scheduled time which can be quite rare these days in most physio clinic.

He is knowledgeable in his field and would not hesitate to refer on when a problem requires other adjunct therapies.  Definitely someone a patient can trust who has your best interest in mind.

  • I began seeing Kenny as the result of a neck injury I sustained and was unable to resolve through various other therapeutic methods. At the time, the pain and discomfort I was experiencing, and the extended length of time that I had been dealing with it, led me to believe that the injury was permanent. Kenny was able to diagnose the issues at the first appointment and immediately began to eliminate my neck pain through a combination of gentle manipulations and acupuncture treatments.

The exercises and stretches that Kenny prescribed also clearly served to accelerate the healing process. Today, I am enjoying pain-free range of motion in my neck and an overall sense of back health that goes beyond my pre-injury state of being. I am very grateful to Kenny for his excellent care and recommend him  without hesitation to anyone who is seeking a highly intuitive, gentle and effective physiotherapist.
